The plastic bag ban in China we blogged on here, came into effect on Sunday. Shoppers will now be charged between 0.2 yuan to 2 yuan for the plastic bags they use. A survey by the China Plastics Processing Industry Association said Chinese people consume up to 1 billion plastic shopping bags every day. Experts predict that the consumption will be reduced by two thirds going forward. More information on putting the ban in force is available at China Daily and more details on reducing plastic bag consumption worldwide is available on this blog written by our former intern Aaron Fu. The blog also gives a table of the different prices retailers in China are charging for plastic bags.
