Md. Atiqul Islam heads up the CEBAI, a joint initiative of ILO and BGMEA, and supported by H&M and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). CEBAI aims to establish a replicable model of an industry driven training and support service for Bangladesh’s ready-made garment sector.
Serving BGMEA as President in 2013 – 2014, Mr. Atiqul has been actively involved with BGMEA’s various activities and initiatives over the past 27 years. During his tenure as President, he successfully led the industry to face the hurdles arising from Tazreen Fashion factory fire and the Rana Plaza tragedy and to turnaround the challenges. Under his leadership, the apparel sector set a new course to achieve more compliant factories than before, as well as improved working conditions and more harmonious industrial relations.
Mr. Atiqul is a dynamic entrepreneur who completed his higher studies with a degree from the University of Dhaka. He started his journey in the Bangladesh garment sector in 1985, and in the ensuing three decades has built the Islam Garments Group of which he is Managing Director. His group comprises more than 20 business units that employ over 15,000 workers. Walmart has honored Mr. Atiqul with the prestigious award as most successful entrepreneur in 1997, 1998, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2010.
Mr. Atiqul is also a Member of the Board of Trustees of BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT). The Government of Bangladesh declared him a Commercially Important Person (CIP) on several occasions.
